A Tip from Melanie You’ve probably heard people say, “I need to send out some PR.” They may intend to send out press releases, but in reality, PR is not something you mail. In fact, “PR” doesn’t stand for press release. The initials stand for the term “public relations.” PR should be part of every company’s marketing plan. A well-designed marketing plan will help you change buying habits, and a PR plan within it will help you change attitudes toward your company and its services or products. PR lets you break away from marketing’s focus on the features and benefits of your product and lets you focus on your company’s image. For example, if the public’s perception of copywriting is that anyone can do it, no one will buy my services. If, however, I use PR to change attitudes, potential customers will see me as an efficient, cost-effective marketing solution. You have a range of PR tools at your disposal including press releases, special events, product samples, customer relations, trade journal articles, letters, phone calls and more. The techniques you use will be determined by the goals you outline in your PR plan in addition to your budget, timeframe and capabilities.
